splitting audio files

Postby jerrybee » Mon Jan 17, 2011 9:00 pm

I have an audio .wav file of 3.2 GB size. Would you please suggest a program I can use to split that file into, say, 6 files, each of which could then be burned onto a CD. I've tried a regular file-splitter program -- the 1st resulting file played OK but was listed as being 5+ hours long, while the remaining 5 files weren't recognized by a wav-playing program as being playable. Thanks.

Side note: boy, am I gonna feel stupid if Derek comes back and tells me that Wave Corrector will do the desired task for me ! ! ! If not, might this feature be worthy of consideration for inclusion in WC ?

I encountered this problem once myself. WavCor won't open it because it surpasses the 3GB limit imposed by Windows. It won't open the file for correction even if it was recorded in the same session!

What I did in my case was open the file in Audacity to break it up into smaller chunks. Select the portion of interest then export the selection as wav.

Now that Derek has neatly fixed all the bugs in the 'Merge Open' dialogue, maybe he can start work on a 'Break Open' dialogue as well.

Cheers,
Glenn

Hey Glenn,
Thanks for the reply and info. I know nothing about how audio files are arranged, but I have a suspicion, following my experiences today, that the file size and playing-duration are embedded at the start of the file. I took the first 1/6th of it, a file about 617MB in size, and it would play OK. I then tried to burn a CD of it, and was advised that the file duration was over 5 hours while the CD size was only a bit over 1 hour, so the burn wouldn't continue.
I will try Audacity tonight, and post the results.

Yes, I can see a file splitter would have that effect. There used to be program called Wave Split that would split the file properly, but I haven't seen it in years and don't know if it's still available.

With Audacity it won't be an issue because the exported selection is an entirely new file with it's own header.

Audacity worked fine, once I'd made the requisite number of mistakes in trying to use it without reading any Help info -- a bad habit of mine.

Thanks again for suggesting Audacity.
