I also use the M-Audio 2496 Soundcard, and am very happy with it. This is probably the best internal soundcard one can purchase. For any further improvement, you'd have to opt for an external box. Although at line-level inputs, an internal card should be fine. This is in spite of the fact that many of my hi-fi colleagues had reservations regarding noise from the computer with an internal card. I've not detected any from my personal experience.
The 2496 provides gold-plated RCA jacks for line in/out. There is neither a speaker output, which I thought was another advantage. It also has a very flexible mixer/patch consul.
